Equal or more powerful than its relative cramp bark (V. opulus).  Black haw is  also used as a uterine tonic to ease menstrual pains and to prevent miscarriage. It can be used as an adjunctive antispasmadic agent to treat asthma, palpitations, heart disease and mood swings. With its tannin content, it can be used to stop diarrhea.
